I realized something this football season.
I am about to marry a diehard Denver Broncos fan.
Sure, I have known Brendan to be a Broncos fan since day one. But the reality of my fate is starting to sink in.
I remember when Brendan and I first started dating he wouldn’t even let me watch a Sunday Denver game with him until a good month or so into our relationship. It’s almost as if he was afraid of losing his ‘good guy’ image or something. It didn’t take me very many games to realize…. Brendan is one of those fans.
During football season, our Sunday mornings look a little something like this:
Brendan will wake up (way too early for me) and shoot out of bed like a kid on Christmas morning! With excitement in his voice and pep in his step, he immediately dawns a Broncos jersey then continues to bounce around the house chanting some joyous Broncos chant. He usually makes these up on the spot and will continue to sing them until game time. (Did I mention I was still sleeping?) Then comes the blaring sounds of ESPN’s NFL Countdown followed by the phone calls from his immediate inner circle of fellow Broncos fans.
That’s just the pre-game people. Actually watching a Broncos game with Brendan is a whole different story. As soon as kickoff starts- he is completely immersed. It’s time to hang on tight for whatever rollercoaster we might be on! He also has weird rituals that he believes will make or break a game. We’re talking- sit in the same seat, drink out of the same cup, eat the same meal as last week….because they WON last week. Should any of the above elements be altered, the universe is therefore not in sync and if we happen to LOSE it is for sure because we did not follow the recipe for success.
OK…I joke, I joke. But you get the point.
I have come to the conclusion that we will most certainly have to purchase the NFL Ticket once we start a family or else I will be a single parent every Sunday during football season. Being a true fan isn’t a hobby- it’s a lifestyle.
With that being said….
I, Mary, take you, Brendan, to be my lawfully wedded husband. I promise to love you, cherish you, and root for the Denver Broncos till death do we part. I promise to be a fan in good seasons and bad; playoffs or no playoffs; win or lose. I will love you, respect you and honor your devotion to the Denver Broncos all the days of my life.
